Who Moved My Cheese?
Written By DR Spencer Johnson.
Many years
ago, four animals lived in a Bhulbhulaya.
They used to
run around in that blunder all day to keep their
bellies full and happy.
Two of them were mice, and their names were Sniff and Curry.
There were
two Lilliputians that resembled mice and looked and acted much like humans.
Their names were Hem and H.
In this book, things mean the thing you
want most,
be it a good job, a good relationship, money or power,
or good health or emotional peace.
And by mistake is meant the thing where you keep looking for it.
When
something unexpected happens suddenly in our lives,
such as a job loss or the death of a family member -
we act a bit like a sniffer, who anticipates that something is about to change.
Again, I act a bit like curry without thinking about anything and get down to
government work or I act like Hem who doesn't
want to accept any new change,
but tries to block that change, because some new change means a new danger for
him,
and someone else acts like H Doer -
One who adapts himself to new changes over time,
when he understands that these changes are for his good.
Every
morning, the two mice and the two Lilliput’s would run around the maze hoping
to get the special cheese.
There were numerous lanes and holes in that Bhulbhulaya.
Among them were some tasty cheeses in just a few shells.
But at the same time, there were some dark alleys and some scary holes where
anyone could get lost at any time.
Sniff could use his long nose to find out where the cheese might be, and Curry
would quickly run to save the cheese.
The place where the four of them found the cheese was called Station-C.
Thus, every morning they would run on all fours with running socks and find interesting things and thus it became a permanent routine for them.
Every morning the two rats put on running shoes and ran to save the cheese at station
C and the two Lilliput’s.
After a few days there was a slight change in the routine,
Hem and H started waking up a little later every day, getting ready to sleep
and run.
Instead they now walk to station C because they now know where to find cheese.
All four of them assumed that they would find cheese here for the rest of their
lives.
And Lilliput both went to their comfort zone.
Suddenly one
morning Sniff and Curry went to station C and
found that there was no more cheese.
They were not at all surprised because they had noticed a few days ago that the
amount of cheese was decreasing day by day.
Running Suze later, started running again to find cheese elsewhere.
As the situation changed, they both changed themselves and after a lot of
running around, they found Cheez at another station.
On the other hand, the two Lilliput’s Hem and H arrived late at station C as
usual,
and after finding no cheese there,
Hem exclaimed - Who Moved My Cheese...??
They never
noticed that the amount of cheese was decreasing day by day,
and they unconsciously thought that they would get cheese here for the rest of
their lives.
Both of them thought a lot, without finding any solution, and went back home
dejected.
The next morning, the two Lilliputians went back to Station C, hoping to find
the cheese,
and started looking again, thinking that someone might leave the cheese again,
but that didn't happen, so they both were shocked again,
unable to solve any food problem, and Didn't even understand
what they need to do
now..?
They realized that they had to change themselves as the situation changed.
Suddenly a
question arose in H's mind,
well, where is Sniff and Curry?? Are they also facing this problem...??
In the meantime, the two mice had found the cheese in another place, which was
much more dangerous called Station N.
At one point
in Lilliput, we have to find new addresses to find things, and on the other
hand Hem doesn't want to leave that comfort zone.
They both realized that if they sit like this,
no one will ever bring cheese to their mouths,
so they also went in search of a new address to find cheese and one time,
like Sniff and Curry, that new address arrived at Station N.
The gist of
this book is,
If you can't
change yourself, chances are you'll disappear.
It's highly
recommended, must read.
